OpenAI shutting down video generator Sora
OpenAI announced on Tuesday it will shut down its AI-powered video generator app Sora, but did not provide further details on the decision.
“We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora shared it, and built community around it: thank you,” the company wrote in post Tuesday. “What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.”
”We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work,” the X post continued, signed by “The Sora Team.”
The app was released in late 2024, gaining quick attention for its ability to produce vivid and realistic video clips with text prompts. The videos were often humorous in nature, often going viral on major social media platforms.
But various advocacy groups and experts also raised concerns it could lead to an increase in nonconsensual images and realistic deepfakes. These concerns were amplified in September, when OpenAI released the second-generation Sora model, which created even more realistic video clips.
It is not clear what will happen to OpenAI’s partnership with Disney, which was announced just three months ago. The three-year licensing agreement, which included a $1 billion equity investment into OpenAI from Disney, gave Sora access to more than 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars characters.
The Hill reached out to Disney for comment.
OpenAI indicated in recent months that the heavy use of Sora was straining the company’s servers and the head of Sora said last November that the firm’s graphics processing units (GPUs) “are melting.” The company limited the number of video generations as a result.
It comes ahead of a possible initial public offering for OpenAI later this year and follows various business changes at the company, the Wall Street Journal first reported.
