Trump administration falsely accuses Smithsonian of ‘extreme political activism’
President Trump is escalating his fight over who gets to tell America’s story.
Just days after Independence Day, the White House released a 162-page report accusing the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History — which I happened to visit just a few days ago — of promoting what it calls “extreme political activism.”
On page 18, the report states that the Smithsonian “cannot be trusted to tell America’s story honestly and in a way that is inspiring, unifying, and worthy of our great republic.”
It’s the latest step in the president’s broader effort to reshape America’s cultural institutions under his executive order, called “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.”
We’ve already seen changes at the National Park Service, where references to Harriet Tubman were briefly removed from an Underground Railroad webpage, “enslaved African Americans” became “enslaved workers,” and information about Benjamin Franklin’s history as a slave owner disappeared before being restored after public backlash.
