SDSU agrees to Title IX settlement over female athlete scholarships

San Diego State University (SDSU) on Monday agreed to a Title IX settlement after it was accused of giving less scholarship money to female athletes compared to male ones.

The university has agreed to pay $300,000 for almost 800 female former athletes to split. The payout will go to athletes from the 2018-2019 to the 2024-2025 academic years.

SDSU will also pay $1.3 million in the plantiffs’ attorney fees and costs.

U.S. District Judge Todd Robinson approved the settlement on Monday after it was negotiated at the end of last year.

The Hill has reached out to the plaintiffs’ attorney and the university for comment.

“These women have made history,” attorney Arthur Bryant told USA Today Sports. “This is the first case ever in which a school is going to pay damages to women athletes for depriving them of equal athletic financial aid. It is definitely not going to be the last. And SDSU is going to comply with Title IX.”

The case, started in 2022, alleged the school engaged in discrimination based on sex for giving more scholarship money to male athletes.

The settlement also won female athletes other benefits such as the ability to fly to competitions more than six hours away and promised repairs to women’s sports facilities.
