Trump keeps pressure on Pirro as Reflecting Pool cases collapse

It’s unclear whether President Trump will ultimately fire U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, a longtime ally, but his recent comments and posts about the Reflecting Pool signal he is not letting the possibility go anytime soon.

Pirro’s future in the Trump administration has not yet been guaranteed roughly a week after Trump lashed out at the former Fox News host over her move to drop vandalism charges against U.S. Olympian David Hearn.

Trump has not said whether he will oust Pirro from her role but has continued to publicly pressure her to revisit the case.

“U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro should re-visit her hastily made decision,” he posted Friday on Truth Social, a day after D.C. Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman formally dismissed charges against Hearn. Edelman has yet to rule on whether prosecutors could attempt to revive the case.

Despite Pirro’s initial insistence that prosecutors had enough evidence to prove Hearn “willfully damaged” the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the felony case against him— and misdemeanor cases against three others— quickly fell apart.

Pirro’s office conceded in late July court filings that a flawed and rushed installation by a no-bid contractor caused the “American flag blue” paint on the pool to peel, not vandalism. Prosecutors pointed the finger at the Interior Department for failing to provide an accurate account of the problem before the case was brought to a grand jury. 

On Saturday, the president posted pictures of the alleged vandalism, writing “the material was cut right where the video tape showed, for 300 feet or more. People were on their knees with their hands in the water at the exact location of the ‘slashes'” on Truth Social.

In a subsequent post on Sunday, Trump acknowledged there was “some contractor error” with the renovations at the Lincoln Memorial. 

“There was substantial damage to the Reflecting Pool, also but, unfortunately, there is no video or proof, other than the damage, itself,” the president said, noting, “as with many jobs, there was also some contractor error done by rushing the job for a July 4th opening.”
