Can Republicans survive the midterms of Rage?

With less than six months until election day, let’s welcome you to what I’ll call the “Midterms of Rage.”

Here’s your ballot. Question One: Do you stand with congressional Republicans proposing $1 billion in funding for their president to build a White House ballroom? President Trump tore down the East Wing of the White House without consulting anyone. But he assured critics that private donations would cover the cost of a bigger ballroom, and it would be cost-free to taxpayers.

Now Trump is asking the public to pay a very significant part of the bill. And his loyalists in the GOP majority on Capitol Hill are backing him. They now say the $1 billion is for better security.

Here is question two on the ballot: Do you support candidates from the party that blocked Congress from using the War Powers Act to call for a vote on Trump’s war against Iran?

The president pledged the war would be over in a few weeks. Then he said the enemy had been defeated. Then he said the war is over. But the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and missiles continue to be launched.

The price tag on this war is already $25 billion, and with no clear gain in sight, it is entering its third month. Most stunning, the quiescent GOP majority in Congress is preventing Congress from questioning Trump’s military adventurism.

Polls show a pulsing desire from about three-quarters of Democrats to vote in “Midterms of Rage.” They see the upcoming elections as “more important than past midterms.” That is 21 percent higher than Republicans, according to the ABC-Washington Post poll.

An NPR-PBS poll suggests that intense anger will be on display. It finds that 61 percent of Democrats are........
