Voters lean in favor of codifying Trump’s MFN policy

A new poll shows there is strong bipartisan support among battleground voters for Congress to codify President Trump’s “most favored nation” drug pricing policy, which would require pharmaceutical companies to lower the prices they charge Americans to match the same as other countries.

Conducted by Democratic polling firm Lake Research Partners, the poll found drug pricing is high on the list of voters’ priorities ahead of November’s midterm elections. 

Nearly 6 in 10 voters said they believe prescription drug prices have not gone down enough, and the federal government needs to do much more to reduce prices. Nine in 10 said it’s important for Congress to act.  

According to the poll, 91 percent of battleground voters support the “most favored nation” idea, and 85 percent would be more likely to vote for a candidate who backs it. 

The poll of 1,200 registered voters across five states and 33 competitive House districts found 65 percent specifically support Congress passing legislation that would codify such a policy into law. 

President Trump and administration officials have repeatedly called on Congress to put the force of law behind the deals he has struck with 17 drug companies. While the specific terms of the deals have been kept secret, they are voluntary agreements without any real enforcement mechanism, unless Congress acts. So far, GOP lawmakers have been muted about doing so.
