House GOP moves to codify Hegseth’s ‘Department of War’ name change

Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee moved to codify Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s “Department of War” name change during a marathon session of debate over the annual defense policy bill. 

Lawmakers on the committee, in a party-line vote, adopted the amendment from Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) to formally change the Department of Defense to the Department of War, a name preferred by Hegseth and President Trump.

“Now that you can see firsthand how beautiful it actually is, you will have no choice, [but] to vote for this amendment,” Jackson said late Thursday as Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) held the Pentagon’s logo with the name. 

Democrats pushed back on the effort during the debate.
