Memorial Day travel could set record in 2026: AAA

INDIANAPOLIS (WXIN) – For many, Memorial Day serves as the kickoff to the summer season, leading to millions throughout the United States traveling for weekend getaways.

According to AAA, officials project that 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 21-25 for the Memorial Day holiday, a forecast that sets a new record and is slightly higher than 2025.

Officials said that out of the total, 39.1 million are expected to drive. During the holiday weekend, drivers are projected to pay more at the pump compared to 2025. The release said that currently, pump prices are the highest they’ve been since 2022.

Drivers should also expect the heaviest congestion on May 21-22 between 3-6 p.m., as well as on the afternoon........
