Stop the Trump ballroom bunker bandwagon dead in its tracks 

President Trump’s call for taxpayers to foot the bill to build a $400 million palatial White House ballroom and bunker after a failed assassination attempt is a grievous political misstep and a sad waste of precious presidential power. The White House should be a residence for the president, not a palace for an autocrat.

Trump’s loyal lapdogs like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and even Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) jumped on the ballroom bunker bandwagon. Senate Republicans want to include $1 billion in funding for security upgrades associated with the ballroom in the Department of Homeland Security spending bill.  

This is the last thing embattled Republican congressional candidates need six months before the midterm elections. Democrats should pounce on Trump’s latest unforced error.  

Despite Trump’s promises that the palatial presidential ballroom would materialize solely with private money, Republicans want to tax Americans as much as $1 billion to fully secure it. This comes at a time when consumers can’t even afford to fill their family cars with gasoline or even feed their families.  

The national financial crisis persists because El Supremo broke his promise to start reducing prices on day one of his second term. A word to the wise for the 2028 presidential candidates: Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
