Trump administration planning extra tariffs after forced labor investigation
The Trump administration on Tuesday moved to introduce additional tariffs on trading partners, citing concerns of forced labor.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) accused 60 economies of importing goods made with forced labor or failing to enforce restrictions on the purchase of such goods.
Double-digit tariffs will be enforced on 16 key trading partners, including Canada, Ecuador, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Malaysia, Taiwan and Britain. Each will be subject to a 10 percent levy.
Others, including China, India, Nigeria, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand and 45 other nations, will pay a 12.5 percent tariff.
“The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with forced labor is unacceptable,” USTR Jamieson Greer said in a statement.
