Top Texas elections official stepping down

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson on Tuesday announced that she’s stepping down ahead of midterm elections amid several Lone Star State races that have garnered national attention.

She’s set to depart her office, which did not provide a reason for her departure, on July 17. 

“It has been my goal to ensure that voting in Texas is secure, accessible and fair,” Nelson said in a statement announcing her resignation. 

“We have worked extensively to ensure accurate voter rolls and to educate voters about what they need to know to vote with confidence,” she added.

Nelson served in the position for three years after receiving a unanimous confirmation vote from the state Senate.

She presided over seven statewide........
