OTTAWA—Is the transition of Her Excellency Mary Simon to make way for the next governor general a sign that reconciliation is over? Short answer: no. 

Reconciliation is bigger than any one of us. And we all benefitted from the grace, strength and leadership of our outgoing Governor General.

It was essential to have the first Indigenous Governor General at this crucial time after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Simon changed the world for Indigenous youth who for the first time saw “one of us” take on such a role and succeed. No more air time on languages, instead let’s highlight how this Governor General raised the profile of Indigenous success and contribution, and about mental health.  

Okay, just one rant: all the talk about language-be-damned is blatant colonizer talk. Indigenous Peoples are original to this country, and Indigenous languages are first on this land. If this is so controversial, an affront to what was done before, then that is precisely........
