In his recent contribution to these pages, Portugal's Ambassador to Pakistan, Paulo Domingues, made a persuasive case for carrying 76 years of diplomatic friendship into a more ambitious phase. His emphasis on trade, education, renewable energy and people-to-people exchange identifies the right possibilities. The policy question now is how two distant countries can convert diplomatic goodwill into a durable architecture of cooperation.

The answer may already be taking shape. Pakistan and Portugal are connected by an expanding human corridor: students entering Portuguese universities, entrepreneurs creating businesses, professionals supplying expertise and workers supporting sectors facing labour shortages. Portugal's 2024 migration data recorded more than 41,000 Pakistani residents. Bilateral policy, however, has not yet caught up with this social reality.
