One of us! One of us! One of us!

In the final round of The Masters on Sunday, Chinese golfer Haotong Li was playing quite well. He was paired with Scottie Scheffler, who nearly caught Rory McIlroy in the last four hours. Li himself was a bit of a dark horse, climbing up the leaderboard, until hole 13 took him for an absolute ride. It might go down as one of the worst Masters blow-ups in history. On a tough par 3 at 13, Li ended up tallying the unheard-of quintuple bogey: a 10. He went from a 10th-place tie to tied for 38th. It was brutal, and though viewers weren’t able to watch it in the primetime coverage, clips later went viral online.

It is painful to watch an athlete suffer such a devastating collapse. Of course, I frankly would never want a Chinese golfer to win the Masters. In fact, I was miffed that McIlroy, a Northern Irishman, won it twice in a row. But I also would never wish this upon my enemies. He crumbled like a Chinese bridge.

I say that Li is “one of us” because this is just an average blow-up for a local municipal golfer. We’ve all been there. It’s getting late in the round, and you’re starting to fade. Maybe you are on track to beat your personal record, or you are competing against a friend for $100, and the nerves begin to creep in. One bad shot leads to another bad shot, which leads to another bad shot because they were trying too hard to overcompensate for the last two bad shots. The next thing you know, you’re in the water, and your friend is hectoring you to make sure you count the dropped ball.

Watch the video for yourself. It’s so painfully bad that I wouldn’t be surprised if the Chinese Communist Party Jack Ma’s him into oblivion.  This was my first time seeing a Chinese golfer get remotely close to winning an American major, and he blew it big time. If Cam Young or Scottie had pulled it off, this would have been a huge PR win for America.
