STEVEN FINAN: Dundee’s councillors must break convention and speak up on soaring officer salaries

Last week, I wrote about senior council managers, directors, chiefs and other assorted non-jobs.

I pointed out that a reorganisation of local government to create fewer councils is needed.

This week, flashing a two-fingered salute at the public, we got news of just how big this year’s pay rises were for council officers.

Dundee citizens, you now pay city council chief executive Greg Colgan more than £200,000.

You pay more than £130,000 to Judy Dobbie, head of Leisure and Culture Dundee, who presided over the closure of Caird Park golf – which was later ratified by councillors – and the shambles of the Regional Performance Centre’s falling-apart floor.

You pay many more £100,000-plus salaries for unelected, unaccountable, unneeded “managers”.

These pay rises are multiplied 32 times across Scotland after council umbrella........
