STEVE FINAN: Backing businesses means encouraging cars to visit Dundee’s high streets

I fully back The Courier’s Fresh Start campaign to rejuvenate city and town centres.

I applaud the ambition and leadership shown.

A successful centre for shopping or socialising needs customers delivered to it as hassle-free as possible.

That means cars – the overwhelming majority of people still want to travel by car.

That’s a fact proved by looking at any road.

Now, bike-brains argue this is wrong.

Banning cars is not good for business

When I expressed support for businesses angry at plans for active travel priority on Dundee’s Arbroath Road, I was scornfully told I have no understanding of the subject.

It’s access by bike that improves footfall and raises revenues.

The claim was that roads and parking aren’t good for business; cycle lanes are.

They told me passing trade from motorists is routinely........
