Whether you know him as the energetic "Grandmaster" from Dance India Dance or the man who made an entire generation groove to Disco Dancer, Mithun Chakraborty has remained a beloved name for decades. But behind the iconic dance moves, blockbuster films and countless accolades lies a story few know in its entirety.

From walking away from a dangerous past and sleeping on Mumbai's footpaths while chasing an acting career to becoming one of India's most celebrated actors with over 350 films and three National Film Awards, Mithun's journey is one of perseverance, reinvention and determination.

A difficult beginning

Born as Gouranga Chakraborty in Kolkata, Mithun spent his childhood far removed from the glamour of the silver screen. He completed his BSc in Chemistry from Scottish Church College, but life soon took an unexpected turn.

During the politically turbulent years of the late 1960s and early 1970s, he became associated with the Naxalite movement. However, the accidental death of his only brother became a turning point in his life. Realising he wanted a different future, Mithun decided to leave the movement despite the risks involved. The decision wasn't easy, but it marked the beginning of a new chapter.

Determined to rebuild his life, he enrolled at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he began learning the craft of acting and discovered a new purpose.

An award-winning debut, but no easy road

Mithun's talent became evident from the very start. In 1976, he made his film debut with acclaimed filmmaker Mrinal Sen's Mrigayaa. Playing a tribal hunter, he delivered a performance that earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor—a rare achievement for a newcomer.

Yet, winning India's highest acting honour........
