EDITORIAL: China’s new ethnic unity law should not carry weight abroad
Concerns are heightening that the new law put in force by China on July 1 to promote ethnic unity and progress will not only lead to a domestic crackdown but could also have effects overseas.
The new law is aimed at heightening a sense of community among the peoples of China through educational and cultural activities, and to prevent terrorism and acts of ethnic division.
About 90 percent of China’s population is made up of Han Chinese, with 55 minority ethnic groups making up the remaining 10 percent.
While the Chinese Constitution declares equality among all ethnic groups, the national structure is one in which Han Chinese have an overwhelming predominance.
Under Chinese President Xi Jinping, priority has been placed on state unity rather than protecting the rights of minority ethnic groups.
