Swindon shoppers have mixed views on town centre's rejuvenation
Traders and shoppers in Swindon's town centre worrying that the new bus interchange might not bring shoppers back sparked a lot of discussion.
The eastern end of The Parade, a pedestrianised street in Swindon, was boarded up for two years.
This was to allow for the renovation of Fleming Way and the development of a public transport hub.
Currently, five out of more than twenty retail units in The Parade are vacant.
The shops mainly consist of larger chains, with only one independent shop and four charity shops.
This situation has raised concerns among local traders and shoppers about the future of the area.
Paul Holmes, a local shop owner, expressed his sadness about the situation: "It is very sad and concerning how the centre has been slowly stripped of retailers.
"But the remaining businesses need continuing support from Swindonians.
"The more the local economy thrives, the better for all of us."
Some residents are not convinced that the new bus interchange will improve foot traffic.
Barry Knapp remarked: "You could park a few buses down there, wouldn’t even need to walk........
