HGV drivers respond to calls for ban on Wiltshire road

Calls to stop heavy goods vehicles using a Wiltshire street as a shortcut sparked a lot of discussion.

A highways improvement request was recently submitted to Marlborough Town Council calling for measures to stop large vehicles from using Silverless Street.

This came after an incident in August when locals say an articulated lorry blocked the road and nearly damaged houses as it tried to navigate past a Waitrose delivery van.

The latest request was supported by the town council’s planning committee at a recent meeting and will now be sent to the Local Highways and Footways Improvement Group for further consideration.

Here’s what you had to say on the matter.

Trebor Roberts said: “Do the public think HGV Drivers like going through small streets? Put warehouses on industrial estates, problem solved, don't keep blaming the drivers.”

Peter Edge said: “They only do it because the roads go that way and someone has ordered something that they deliver, it is not a choice that most drivers would take lightly because they are on time limits and may have anything up to 30 deliveries to make.

“Remember when these roads were built they were for a horse and cart, now the vehicles are almost 70ft long, could also be 16 ft high........
