Crimestopppers' cashless campaign sparks anger from public
A new Crimestoppers campaign in Swindon and Wiltshire warning the public about how ‘dirty money’ is laundered through local businesses sparked a debate about going cashless.
The independent charity says organised crime gangs generate huge amounts of cash from activities such as drug dealing, human trafficking, modern slavery, counterfeit goods, weapons sales and sexual exploitation.
To enjoy lavish lifestyles, they must ‘clean’ or launder this ‘dirty money' whic often involves cash-only businesses such as barbershops, nail bars, pubs, takeaways, car washes and delivery drivers.
The campaign has sparked a lively debate among local residents, many of whom took to Facebook to share their views.
Some worry about the implications for small businesses and the ongoing shift away from cash.
Others believe that focusing on cash-only shops is unlikely to make a real dent in criminal finances.
The use of cash in daily life and the impact on small businesses was a recurring theme.
