Careers in Sports: Three executives in NIL space weigh in from school perspective
Since the NCAA introduced its policy on name, image and likeness in 2021, the conversation has constantly focused on how it’s affecting athletes and universities. One part that typically goes unmentioned is the staff who oversee NIL within these athletic departments, and how their roles play a huge part in making the processes seamless for student athletes.
With the policies surrounding NIL continuing to grow, these roles are ever-changing. They require a constant flexibility and knowledge of legalities within the NCAA structure, but also knowledge about the individual teams and athletes within their specific colleges. I spoke with Brent Blum, director of NIL development at Iowa State University; Haneen Rashwan, director of NIL administration at Baylor University; and Maya Bulger, assistant athletic director for NIL administration and partnerships at Mississippi State University, about their day-to-day, what skills they use the most within their roles and the adjustment period of starting their roles.
1) What inspired you to begin a career in the NIL space within college athletics?
Bulger: I’ve always been drawn to the professional sports agency world, and during undergrad, I developed a deep passion for college athletics. When the NIL space emerged, it gave me the perfect opportunity to combine both interests.
Rashwan: I love being innovative and outside-of-the-box thinking! This space really allowed me to dive into that and truly create........
