The Delegate Whose Trump Tribute Is “Starting a New Fashion Trend” at the RNC

On Monday night, former President Donald Trump emerged at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee for his first public showing since Saturday’s shooting wearing a square gauze bandage over his right ear. By Tuesday afternoon, a delegate was spotted on the convention floor by the all-seeing cameras of C-SPAN sporting a piece of paper over his ear, in solidarity.

I spotted the delegate Tuesday night in the Arizona section and told him that he had gone viral. He thanked me.

“I created a monster, I think,” he said.

The delegate was Joe Neglia, from Tempe, Arizona, who told me he was “starting a new fashion trend.” When I asked whether anyone else was participating in this trend, he pointed to one other member of the Arizona delegation at the end of the next row, who was still workshopping how to get a dangling piece of paper to stay on her ear—perhaps by tucking it into her hat.
