Heavy snow could fall in Lake Tahoe during the first weekend of the new year. 

After an extremely dry start to ski season that left resorts shuttered into December, the Lake Tahoe region is finally starting to see back-to-back snow showers adding needed inches to the anemic snowpack. 

National Weather Service meteorologist Tyler Salas said the heavy snow is expected to start Friday evening and continue through the weekend.

“It’s not really one coherent system,” Salas said. “It's a one kind of stronger system, followed by a couple smaller storms that'll kind of help contribute additional snowfall.”
