Bay Area burger favorite heads to LA after yearslong wait
“There’s a million great burgers out there, and there are at least 100 in LA. Hopefully, we’re one of those 100.”
That’s Joel Gott, co-founder of Gott’s Roadside, talking about his iconic Napa Valley burger, sandwich and salad roadside stand — which now has eight locations in Northern California and has served more than 12 million burgers — opening a 3,500-square-foot indoor-outdoor outpost at the equally iconic Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles. Founded in 1999 in St. Helena as Taylor’s Automatic Refresher and renamed Gott’s Roadside in 2010, the company has never before expanded farther south than Palo Alto, until now.
Southern California, and particularly LA, has been on Gott’s mind for years.

“I started looking down here with Clay [Walker], who runs all of the restaurants, before the pandemic,” Gott says. “I always wanted to be located at places that were meaningful in their community, like the Ferry Building [in San Francisco] or Oxbow Public Market [in Napa]. As we looked around the Bay Area, there were only a few more spots that made sense. The easiest next step was Southern California.”
