Largest Calif. wildfire this year grows exponentially, closes national monument

LATEST July 5, 3:26 p.m. The Madre Fire along the Central Coast continued to expand overnight and into Saturday morning, growing to 79,630 acres as of 2:32 p.m., with containment still at 10%.

July 4, 1:59 p.m. The state of California’s largest wildfire so far this year, the Madre Fire grew exponentially in hot, dry weather Friday. The wind-driven blaze along the Central Coast is now at 70,800 acres with just 10% containment, according to Cal Fire.

The brush fire has been tearing through grasses, chaparral and oak woodland since Wednesday after starting along state Route 166, which remains closed with “no estimate of re-opening at this time” per Caltrans. The Madre Fire’s growth also led to the emergency closure of the Carrizo Plain National Monument Thursday.
