Unique California mountain house has a bedroom filled with boulders

Imagine biking riding on a mountain trail, deep in the woods of Southern California. Now imagine discovering an abandoned house, one that seems to rise out from the rocks behind it. It’s boarded up, with no roof, clearly unoccupied. But it’s a spectacular design, and you and your partner fall in love. You buy the house, even find the original architect to help you finish it. Your home becomes semi-famous for its incredible organic design.

This isn’t a dream: It’s the true story of 55290 Forest Haven Drive. And now, after almost 30 years, this property’s owners are ready to sell their unique 30-acre retreat, asking $1.949 million.

Even before they understood its architectural heritage, California doctors Ray Webb and Candide Petrol recognized the home was special. They’d been vacationing in Idyllwild for many years when Webb stumbled upon the deserted structure. Excited by what he saw, he convinced Petrol to hike back with him for a closer look.

For the first time in nearly 30 years, the 30-acre property at 55290 Forest Haven Drive in Idyllwild, Calif., has been listed for $1,949,000.

“We are both huge fans of organic architecture,” Petrol said in an episode of HDTV’s “Homes Across America,” explaining what drew her and Webb to the property. Organic architecture or design refers to a style made most famous by Frank Lloyd Wright and is one that seeks to integrate seamlessly into the surrounding environment, making use of surrounding materials to work in harmony with (and celebrate) the natural setting.
