The San Francisco Giants offered no explanation as to why Buster Posey bailed on a previously scheduled interview with KNBR-AM/FM on Thursday morning and was replaced by president and CEO Larry Baer on short notice.

Posey made headlines on Tuesday when he held a press conference and refused to answer any questions about the team’s Pride Night disaster. Almost two weeks ago, four players protested the team’s annual celebration of the LGBTQ community that included rainbow-colored “SF” hats, with three pitchers earning an MLB reprimand for writing Bible verses on their hats while a fourth wore the standard issue orange logo hat instead of the Pride Night version.

The protest moves sparked an entire week of backlash, from baseball fans accusing the Giants of tolerating homophobia in one of the nation’s premier cities for LGBTQ representation and from the conservative Christian right, who argued MLB’s warning to the players amounted to religious discrimination. Even MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred blamed the Giants for “inadequate” communication with players in a letter to Republican Sen. Josh Hawley.

Posey was the first Giants executive made available to the media following the debacle. But when the press conference began, Posey gave only a prepared statement and then refused to answer four straight follow-up questions.
