Three cheers for Jayden King’s Ontario curling team

When the Olympics were on some were thrilled there was a constant variety of sports available to watch on TV.

Others complained, endlessly, there wasn’t anything but sports on TV. Actually both were right. We all love to cheer on our own, Canadians at the Olympics, Ontarians on a smaller stage and locally whenever we get the chance.

Anyone who lives in Tillsonburg, anywhere near Tillsonburg, who has relatives or friends in Tillsonburg or nearby, played or had kids play hockey in Tillsonburg,  ever heard of Tillsonburg or heard  Stompin’ Tom, is cheering and basking in the reflected light of Jayden King’s Ontario curling team playing at The Montana’s Briar in Newfoundland.

Have to say my sister’s daughter is friends with Jayden’s mother so I have a connection, of sorts, and wear it proudly, too. Jayden and his team of Dylan Niepage, Owen Henry and Victor Pietranglo are doing themselves proud and including all of us in their success.

Jayden is actually from Courtland but curls out of the Tillsonburg Curling Club. I am sure everyone knows his and the other team members’ histories by now. Other than all of us who claim connection, most didn’t give this young, new bunch of upstarts any notice or much of a chance against the highly experienced provincial teams especially the Olympic and world champions.

We have to remember and give credit for the many years of hard work these boys have put in to get to national glory. They are uniquely positioned to carry the torch onward and upward in the future of Canadian curling.

At the time of writing, after a long week of highs and a few lows, the team has stayed strong, determined and confident clinching a spot in the finals. Whatever the outcome over the weekend, they are worthy of our admiration, respect and support.

In the midst of all this enjoyment I have a couple annoyances I wish to share.

What does “tomorrow” mean to you? When I am told something or someone will arrive tomorrow I should be confident that means the day after today, not in three or four days. I have stayed home missing events, cancelling visits, lunches, socializing to receive the expected “tomorrow” delivery, which never arrived. This is very irritating and I am complaining to anyone who is in earshot.

I am also very unsettled by the latest commercial on TV which explains how to effectively and safely use illicit, dangerous drugs,  giving tips like letting people know where you intend to get high, have someone with you to watch you get high, take along some Narcan to revive you if you overdose and to start with a low dose. I only saw it once, don’t know who sponsored the ad and I know saving lives is the ultimate goal but does running this kind of ad make sense to anyone? There must be another way, a better way to save lives than explaining how to get wasted safely.  I am completely baffled by this.

Also have some good news. The snow is melting rapidly, which may not be such good news to those who have flooding issues but for many it indicates the end of the ugly season. Right now everything is dirty, dingy but hopefully it won’t be long the land turns a lovely green again.

If you are looking for some spring entertainment, a concert by Men of the Deeps, might be just what you need. They will be performing at the LaSalette Historic Church, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are going fast but can still be purchased online at ticketscene.ca.
