So, there I was a few weeks ago, hand on a tin of pumpkin puree, trying to justify buying it at the “sale” price of $5.99, and in the end I just couldn’t do it.

Now, I can’t remember how much I’d paid for the last tin of pumpkin I’d bought, but I’m quite sure it wasn’t close to $5.99 as I’m not a huge fan to start with.

But, as my hand lingered in mid-air, my brain flashed to the “pie pumpkins” I’d seen on my most recent trip to Greatview Orchards for $3 apiece.

Could I? Should I? Would I?

Determined to strike a blow to big grocery, I made a bold decision.

I would make my own pumpkin puree!

A few days later I headed for Highway 3, and left the market laden down not only with two pie pumpkins, but a bunch of other produce that made me proud to live in Chatham-Kent where we are so fortunate to be able to not only support our local farmers, but also save a few bucks in the process.

After a quick stop at Thompson’s for some apples, I headed home, already questioning the pumpkin purchase.

These pumpkins seemed pretty small in comparison to the usual pumpkins I was used to dealing with.

What if I went to all the effort of doing this, only to end up with less pumpkin than I would........
