RHODES: Smith’s Tire was the place to buy a Graham-Paige car
Many people have a favourite style and year of automobile.
Mine is pinpointed and concise – any coupe from the 1930s!
The art deco styling, lack of straight lines, potato shaped windows and pontoon fenders is, to me, perfection.
I have always been fond of the shark nose coupes from that era made by various manufacturers such as Willis-Overland, Hudson and Graham-Paige.
The shark nose style has the engine hood cowling protruding outward over the engine grill giving the appearance of a shark coming at you from the opposite side of the road and the look is striking.
The appearance has its proponents and detractors and reminds me of the situation and impressions of the late 1940s Studebaker bullet nose. You either loved it or hated it.
My favourite bullet nose cars of the 1930s era were those made by Willis-Overland and known as Americar Coupes.
I am sad to say that most of these coupes went to the stock car tracks after the Second World War, which explains why so few of them have survived.........
