The future for boxwood looks grim.

Boxwood, a broadleaf evergreen, has long been a staple for landscaping. It is appreciated for its hardiness, small glossy leaves and slow growth.

Boxwood grows in sun or shade, and in poor or rich soil.

The enemy is the box tree moth and it is at our doorstep.

First detected in Toronto in 2019, the pest has since been found in Niagara Peninsula, Ontario’s breadbasket of nurseries. Earlier this year it was discovered in London and Windsor.

How quickly it arrives in Sarnia-Lambton and other parts of Southwestern Ontario is anybody’s guess, and how quickly it will affect all boxwoods is another guess.
