How long will our obsession with hydrangeas go on?

Thirty and 40 years ago the hot shrub was purple leaf sand cherry (Prunus x ‘cistena’). At the same time, Euonymus gaiety (Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald Gaiety’) was wildly popular. Twenty years ago, Goldflame Spirea (Spirea bumaldi ‘Goldflame’) became the rage.

By now the popular shrubs of the ‘80s and ‘90s have faded out of memory, and are replaced with hydrangeas.

Hydrangeas have soared in popularity in the last decade or two and are showing no signs of diminishing.

And they are here to stay because hydrangeas come in so many varieties ranging from big and bold, to small and delicate. From snowy white to cherry red and all colours in between.

If there will be a time when hydrangeas lose their appeal, I predict it will........
