Gilberts: Steamer Ploughboy has strong Chatham connection

A few years ago, I purchased a copy of a book by John Carter called The Perils and Pitfalls of the Steamer Ploughboy.

John Carter was the first curator of the John R. Park Homestead in Amherstburg and, in 2018, wrote a book called The Perils and Pitfalls of the Steamer Ploughboy, a steamer owned, for most of its years, by the Park brothers, commemorated at the Park Homestead and Park House.

These days, Carter divides his time between Canada and Tasmania, where he works at the university, but he comes from Essex County.

The steamer Ploughboy also has a strong Chatham connection. The boat was built here by J.M. McDermott and launched on June 24, 1851. McDermott built it for William and Walter Eberts, brothers who were among the first captains of industry in the community. Walter Eberts also was the captain of the Ploughboy, travelling mostly between Chatham and Amherstburg daily.
