What's in a name? Plenty, with a name like Christmas

It’s always been about the name.

For as long as I can remember there has always been someone who would ask in all seriousness “Christmas. What kind of a name is that?”

Not an easy question to answer.

I do know it is one of the few surnames that can translate almost without exception into any language. Smith is Smith in Berlin, Jones is Jones in Mexico City, but Christmas becomes Weihnachten or Navidad.

After introductions to strangers have been completed I wait for five seconds or so and invariably the question that has followed me all my life will be asked.
