Challenges are tied to facing something new, but what gets in the way is the feeling that it is difficult.

Overall learning to do what seems difficult is a life long skill that builds self-confidence and self-esteem.

The keys are settling goals, having realistic expectations, taking baby-steps, experimenting.

Life is filled with challenges, but often what turns an event or situation into a challenge is that it is new. It requires learning new skills and doing something you’ve never done before, whether it’s learning multiplication tables in the third grade, confronting your supervisor about your work schedule, or fixing a leaking faucet in your bathroom. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, unsure how to start, already anticipating a negative outcome, or even feeling victimized by life, all of which can stop you in your tracks.

For many, the feeling that it’s all too difficult—not the learning itself—is the real culprit that keeps you from putting the challenge to rest. Rather than learning to override these negative feelings, you take the easier path—put up with the schedule or quit the job, let the faucet drip.

But it’s not just the faucet or the job; this struggle to do what seems difficult can easily become a modus........
