We may attack, defend, withdraw, blame, explain, or attempt to prove that we are right. These reactions are deeply human. They are often protective strategies that we developed long before the present conversation began.
Yet, when we repeatedly enter a relationship from the same familiar emotional place, we are likely to create the same familiar outcome. The relationship path invites us to do something different. It is a path that moves, step by step, from automatic reaction toward awareness, intention, compassion, and conscious choice.

1. What Kind of World Do I Want to Live In and Help Create?
This may sound like a philosophical question, yet it is also deeply practical. The world we wish to inhabit begins with the emotional world we create between ourselves and another person.
Do I want to help create a world dominated by judgment, defensiveness, fear, and competition, or one that includes greater respect, honesty, compassion, responsibility, and care? We do not create this world only through major decisions. We create it through our tone of voice, the words we choose, the assumptions we make, and the way we respond when someone disappoints us.
