Therapy can feel like a mystery box. You show up, talk about your life, and hope something changes. For many clients, what actually happens in therapy and how progress is measured is unclear. But therapy is healthcare, not magic. Just as you’d expect a plan from a doctor, you deserve the same from a therapist. People are often left unsure of what to ask or what exactly to expect that would help them receive the best care.
Case in point, a friend of mine attended couples therapy week after week, leaving each session more frustrated. When I asked what goals they had set or how progress was being measured, she didn’t know.
