Proximity builds friendship because nearness predicts connection more than compatibility.

Distance doesn't end a friendship, but it turns upkeep from passive to intentional.

Small, unscheduled gestures often matter more than planned check-ins.

One of the things I've realized as I get older is that friendships really do matter. There is something comforting about knowing that if something went wrong, there would be a group of people ready, willing, and able to help out.

Beyond the help, friendship makes life more enjoyable. Not in some magical, one-off way, but in the seemingly random ways that surprise you. A text that arrives at the right moment. A favor offered before you asked. A joke that lands so well it carries you through the rest of the day.

Even better is the spur of the moment hangouts where the world aligns and you can hang out with your friend simply by stopping by their house to drop off your new book and catch up.

Why Proximity Matters

Friendship isn't just about who you like, although that’s important, for sure. In some cases, it's about who you're near.

A 2022 study out of Florida Atlantic University tracked friendships in elementary school classrooms over several months. The researchers found that kids seated next to or near each other were more likely to become friends than kids seated across the room, and when seating charts changed, new friendships formed along the new seating lines.........
