How the Emotionally Intelligent Manage Mistakes With the 3 R's

Emotionally intelligent people often do the "three R's" after making a big mistake.

They take responsibility without excuses, justifications, or attempts to shift the blame.

They often reflect deeply on the mistake and then begin to repair by making permanent changes.

Emotionally intelligent people are self-aware, which means they quickly take responsibility for a mistake. Typically, they do not wait until they get caught. If an error is brought to their attention, they do not immediately deflect and shift the blame by playing the victim. They reflect—and this reflection is not superficial, it is deep. They think about what led them to make this mistake, how it impacted the people around them, and how to repair things and make them right.

Taking responsibility is not something an EI person takes lightly. They are truly remorseful about their transgression and offer a sincere apology free from excuses, justifications, or a victim stance. They own the misstep fully and completely. Authentically owning it requires a hearty self-esteem and a desire to be a better person.
