Navigating Changes in Your Body After Age 50
Aging and weight gain become frequent topics of conversation among older adults. Our bodies begin to reshape themselves, often without our conscious awareness. Once slender waistlines expand; the way our bodies utilize calories undergoes significant changes. Metabolism typically slows, and muscle mass diminishes.
Luigi Ferrucci, M.D., Ph.D., scientific director of the National Institute on Aging, explains, "As we age, there's a natural decline in muscle mass and increase in fat mass. This process, known as sarcopenia, begins around age 30 and accelerates after 50." This shift in body composition can lead to weight gain even without changes in diet or exercise habits.
