The Shift We Need: Why a Hybrid Caring Economy Starts Inside

AI mirrors and amplifies the values embedded by its human creators and users.

Prosocial AI requires examining values before coding, not just fixing biased data later.

Mindset, not just technology, forms the true infrastructure of a caring economy.

The future of artificial intelligence will be shaped by the mindset with which we build, buy, regulate, and use technology. We cannot expect the technology of tomorrow to be better than the humans of today, us.

For decades, modern economies have trained the human mind to focus on what can be counted quickly: quarterly returns, productivity metrics, rankings, clicks, speed, scale, and growth. These indicators help coordinate complex systems. Yet when they become the dominant definition of value, they reshape our attention. People become outputs.

Let’s be clear: trust and dignity are not pleasant additions to “real” economy; they are factors on which it depends. Competitiveness is not a numerical game show, because meaningful success goes beyond bottom-line business. Especially in a hybrid context, it matters to remember that.

A common-good economy sits at the heart of prosocial AI because both begin with a wider idea of value. A caring economy asks that human life be valued beyond immediate material output. Prosocial AI refers to AI systems that are deliberately tailored, trained, tested, and targeted to bring out the best in and for people and the planet. Together, they invite the shift from narrow return-on-value metrics to a rich hybrid return-on-values matrix. Change is overdue.

When Metrics Shape Mindsets

Every society teaches people what to notice. In a short-term economy, we learn to notice what moves numbers fast. The leader asks, “How much did we gain?” before asking, “What did we strengthen?” The institution asks, “How efficient is this?” before asking, “Who became more capable?” The platform asks, “What keeps attention?” before asking, “What deserves attention?”

Over time, questions become habits. Habits become incentives.........
