Holistic Hybrid Health: Why It Starts From the Inside Out

Increasingly, we think with technology, feel through it, choose inside it, and compare ourselves through it.

Meaningful friction is the space from which capacity arises.

Environmental sustainability is a health prerequisite.

A child asks a homework app to explain photosynthesis. A manager asks artificial intelligence (AI) to draft feedback. A mother scrolls through sleep advice. A teenager keeps refreshing a feed that knows his soft spot. An older adult types symptoms into a chatbot. Together, these moments form a new well-being environment.

Health is still shaped by food, movement, sleep, medicine, and social support. Yet another layer runs through impulse, attention, and action: algorithmic mediation. Increasingly, we think with technology, feel through it, choose inside it, and compare ourselves through it.

That is why we need a framework for human health: holistic hybrid health (HHH). It begins from the inside out, with aspirations, emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations. It is nurtured from the outside in, through relationships, institutions, technology, and the planet. Its guiding question: In a world designed to predict behavior, how do we help people make their own best choices and protect agency?

Why the first vital sign is agency

Agency is the ability to act from one’s own attention, judgment, values, and intention. It is the capacity to pause before reacting, notice what is influencing us, and choose in a way that feels ours. A 2025 Microsoft Research study on generative AI and critical thinking collected hundreds of workplace examples. It found that critical thinking depended on the task, user self-confidence, and confidence in the AI system. When people trusted the machine........
