Matrescence and the Challenge of Motherhood

One mother said to me recently that she could not stand getting together with other mothers at her apartment complex because they were just so boring!

This mother was a highly educated, professional woman who had her first baby at age 34, way after she had already established a comfortable pattern of work, reading, getting together with other women like herself, and spending time with her partner who was also a busy professional.

The idea that she should sit around and talk about baby clothes was hard for her.

She had mixed feelings about motherhood. She loved her old way of life, and she also wanted to have children.

She had a mother who was a writer and an intellectual and who paid........
