Sometimes a spoonful of cheer helps lift the spirit when global chaos has overtaken the media.

Attending Mary Poppins by the 8th Avenue Players at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall in Charlottetown provided such a relief.

This stage performance offered young and old a chance to suspend reality and immerse themselves in what our better natures are capable of offering this world. The cast, costumes and sets were everything one would expect in major venues anywhere. The musical accompaniment provided by the band enriched the well-honed vocal skills of the actors.

In other words, yes, it was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

MARY POPPINS A MUST-SEE PERFORMANCE

Do you remember the song Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? It is a timeless song sung by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

My friend and I attended Mary Poppins, The Broadway Musical, at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall Feb. 28. It brought back childhood memories of a beloved story about family and love. The play’s ability to inspire imagination and teach valuable life lessons makes it a cherished classic.

Mary Poppins is a musical based on P.L. Travers’ beloved book series and the 1964 Disney film. The story revolves around the Banks family, particularly Jane and Michael, two spoiled children in need of guidance and discipline. Their lives are transformed when Mary Poppins, a magical and mysterious nanny, enters their world. With her unique blend of magic, whimsy, and practicality, Mary Poppins teaches the children valuable life lessons, helping them develop important skills and values.

The 8th Avenue Players consists of an all-local, all-Island, and talented cast, crew, orchestra and volunteers. Students, professionals, families and friends gave countless hours building, painting, sewing, and rehearsing. The play took months of dedication. Their hard work was witnessed by a well- attended audience who gave a standing ovation. The 8th Avenue Players are recruiting for new Island talent and encourage you to keep an eye out for their next audition. They bring professional theatre opportunities to Islanders.

The sets are big. The costumes are elaborate and the music is demanding. This was an ambitious performance as a production this size is truly daunting. Mary Poppins is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers and astonishing stagecraft.

There is still time to book your tickets. Mary Poppins is being held at the Florence Simmons Performance until March 8.  It also will play at the Scott MacAulay Performing Arts Centre March 21-22.

Mary Poppins is a timeless classic that has captivated audiences worldwide.

I highly recommend Mary Poppins as it is a thrilling story that old and young alike will enjoy. Check out the venue websites for dates and times of performances.  You will not be disappointed!
