When Prime Minister Mark Carney had the opportunity to talk with the crew of the Artemis II mission, he celebrated their teamwork in space and asked them about the risks of their mission — and he also asked them about their music playlist. This could be considered a light-hearted question for astronauts sling-shotting perilously back to earth from the dark side of the moon, but it was much more. Everything carried in a tiny spacecraft has to be essential to survival, and what the prime minister’s question reminds us is that art is essential to survival.

Art is what makes us human, and all of humanity’s greatest achievements are........
