CHEERS AND JEERS: Jeers to the P.E.I. government for dropping Murray Harbour inquiry

Jeers to the P.E.I. government for quietly discontinuing an inquiry into the actions of a Murray Harbour councillor. Premier Rob Lantz ordered the inquiry in 2024 back when he was minister of housing, land and communities. It came after the municipality sanctioned Coun. John Robertston over a sign he posted at his home that alluded to a “max graves hoax.” More than two years after the inquiry was ordered, the public has learned it was discontinued. There was no news release or announcement to alert the public about that decision. A response from the province to The Guardian said continued legal challenges “risked amplifying the message rather than resolving the issue.” If that is the bar governments decide to use, then there will be few inquiries or investigations ever called. It also would have meant the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s important work would never have happened. Since the P.E.I. inquiry wasn’t completed, no results were reported, and nobody knows what it would have found. The person who called the inquiry is now the premier. If Lantz’s own government decided to drop the matter, then what was the point of him calling it in the first place?
