CHEERS AND JEERS: Jeers to commentators for taking swipes at three-man Tyler Smith rink

Jeers to commentators and social media posters for taking swipes at P.E.I.’s Tyler Smith rink for only sending three players to the Brier. Smith and his team have not broken any rules as they stand and it can hardly be considered an advantage to curl with three athletes instead of the usual four and a backup. Also, the team has been faring well, winning both of their games on Tuesday as well as their game on Wednesday, bringing their win-loss ledger to 3-4 as of this writing. So their entry is hardly an embarrassment to the Canadian men’s curling championship. It is easy to see from an Islander’s perspective how hard it would be to get a week off work and pay expenses to travel to Newfoundland and Labrador when many in this province face above average unemployment rates and below-average wages. If anything, Smith and his rink are demonstrating the resiliency and teamwork required to be successful in P.E.I.

Jeers to Health P.E.I. and the Department of Health and Wellness for ongoing issues of trust that have been raised by P.E.I. doctors in the months since the physician services agreement was signed. Dr. Heather Austin says this fractured relationship has driven her to resign with an intention to close her practice and move to Nova Scotia in 2028. Among the issues she shared with Postmedia and in letters to Health P.E.I., which she posted to social media last week, are inequalities in the way doctors in East Prince are compensated for their time compared to Charlottetown physicians. Austin also highlighted issues surrounding messages of accountability and the focus on metrics. “We provide a high level of care for the amount of funding dollars that we receive,” she said. “To be made to feel like that’s not true, I think, is demoralizing.”

Jeers to the provincial government for encouraging municipalities to apply for infrastructure funding and then rejecting two of Stratford’s utility projects. During a recent council meeting, Coun. Jeff MacDonald raised the issue, saying it was very disappointing. Stratford has seen a lot of growth in the last decade or more, and upgrades to its utility infrastructure are needed. It’s not uncommon for municipalities to share the costs of major infrastructure projects and in Stratford’s case, they are talking about essential services. The town is seeing growth limited because of inadequate infrastructure at a time when P.E.I. needs housing built as fast as it can be. It seems contrary to that goal for the province to encourage municipalities to apply for funding and then reject Stratford’s application.

Cheers to the Rustico North Stars for their show of sportsmanship after losing the championship game at the recent Shane Cormier Memorial Meltdown under-11 hockey tournament. Instead of skating off the ice after their loss, the players went to the Kensington Vipers’ exit and held their sticks in the air to make a victory tunnel for the winners. It was a small gesture but one that seems to have resonated with fans and others involved with the tournament. It also comes not long after Kensington police investigated an incident of violence at the same rink. At a time when hockey culture is often referred to in a negative way, it’s good to see a coach teaching his team about more than just the sport. The young players seem to have learned the lesson.
