CHEERS AND JEERS: Jeers to Charlottetown and the province for failing to meet housing requirements
Jeers to municipal and provincial leaders for their roles in losing $1.26 million in housing accelerator funding, which will be clawed back by the federal government out of projects planned for the City of Charlottetown. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation told The Guardian the city had significant delays in its housing action plan, including allowing for four-unit, as-of-right zoning. Charlottetown says it was hung up changing its zoning bylaws for eight months while its official plan sat in the provincial lands office awaiting approval. The province claims this delay is not the cause of the clawback and that there were other issues. This finger-pointing is demonstrative of a failure to work together. Housing is an issue that affects all residents of P.E.I. who expect our elected officials and public service to work towards the best possible outcomes for Islanders. Instead of casting blame, leaders at all levels of government should be looking at how to move these projects forward.
