CHEERS AND JEERS: Cheers to Charlottetown council for returning to Elections P.E.I.'s good graces
Cheers to Charlottetown’s city council for mending its relationship with Elections P.E.I. ahead of this year’s municipal vote. Elections P.E.I., which is not required by law to run the city’s election, had been doing so, along with those of Summerside, Cornwall, Three Rivers and Stratford. That changed after councillor comments led chief electoral officer Tim Garrity to sever the relationship with Charlottetown. Garrity said at the time that his organization’s independence was challenged, and the office “called down” for its past work with the city. If Elections P.E.I. had not agreed to run this year’s vote for Charlottetown, it would have left the city in a serious bind. Instead, council seems to have eaten crow and managed to put the issue to rest. Hopefully, whoever is in office after the next election will remember a lesson learned the hard way.

Jeers to Premier Rob Lantz and the PC government for delaying the start of the spring sitting of the legislature. On Feb. 20, the P.E.I. Premier’s Office announced the sitting would be delayed by a month. That was cutting it pretty close to the legislature’s normal start date set for Feb. 24. It’s also the second time in a year that Lantz prorogued the legislature. Lantz won the PC leadership race Feb. 7, so why did the government not realize sooner that it was unprepared to return to the legislature? The Progressive Conservatives had ample time to choose a new leader after former premier Dennis King stepped down in February 2025. Presumably, an earlier leadership vote would have helped the new premier get ready to start the spring sitting on time. Instead, Islanders have to wait longer for legislation that would deal with some of the province’s most pressing issues, and the government has an extra month to avoid accountability in the public forum of the legislature. P.E.I. is facing a lot of challenges and a somewhat grim fiscal reality. It seems unlikely an extra month will make all the difference.
Jeers to spectators at minor hockey games who fail to control their anger in a setting that should be about supporting kids. The latest example comes from Kensington where local police are investigating a dispute that started in the stands Feb. 22 and escalated in the parking lot. The Kensington Area Minor Hockey Association reminded the community about Hockey P.E.I.’s code of conduct, stating, “As parents and coaches we have a responsibility to promote good sportsmanship and model respect for everyone involved — the players, officials, opposing teams and the game itself. We must remember that at the end of the day, it is just a game — one being played by children who are learning, growing and doing their best.” It is discouraging that there continue to be adults attending these games that need the reminder.
Cheers to P.E.I. curler Brett Gallant for winning gold with the men’s team at the Winter Olympics in Italy. Gallant, who grew up in Charlottetown but lives in Alberta, was part of the Brad Jacobs rink that pulled off a thrilling win against Great Britain. Even more impressive is that he did it after curling in mixed doubles with his wife Jocelyn Peterman earlier in the Games. Although Gallant and Peterman didn’t make the medal round, winning gold with the men’s team must have gone a long way to soothing a bit of that sting. Gallant is in rare company in P.E.I. with only two other Island athletes winning gold at the Olympics. Meanwhile, Islanders may soon be cheering on more medal victories when skier Mark Arendz competes at the Paralympics that get underway March 6.
